The Allotment Projects
The Community Allotment Projects
Anxious, depressed or just want to make new friends?
There’s nothing like pulling on your wellies, getting your hands dirty and spending time out in the fresh air with the sun on your back.
If you enjoy growing fruit and vegetables or you would like the chance to learn more about ‘growing your own’ why not visit us at St Asaph or Ruthin Allotment projects?
The Allotment Projects are the brainchild of Vale of Clwyd Mind – the organisation that helps local people maintain and regain good mental health.
Vale of Clwyd Mind Support worker needs plenty of help to transform the double plot in Ruthin from a wilderness into a working allotment as well as help to continue the development of the plot in St Asaph – we are ready to welcome people who want to help, down at the plots on Wednesday (St Asaph) 10 am til 2 pm and on Friday (Llanfwrog Community Centre Ruthin) 10 am til 2 pm. We are already planning out the space, organising courses and building planters to use in the future!
Director of the organisation, Phil Williams said: ‘We know there a lot of people out there who are suffering from stress and more, due to the recession. Gardening is now accepted as a real tonic for those who are anxious or depressed - GPs recommend it and the benefits have been outlined by celebrity gardener Monty Don.’
Vale of Clwyd Mind’s double plot at the St Asaph allotment has been nurtured lovingly over the last few months by willing members of the project and we are now ready to start growing again! Ruthin's double plot has been vacant for some months and members have started the work of clearing rubbish and weeds, installing fencing, planning out paths and putting in a shed. Planting will start in both allotment projects as soon as possible and there are plans for a full range of fruit and vegetables, salad stuff, herbs and flowers.
We are aiming for an inclusive project where anyone who is interested can come along, help us to plan out the plot and look after whatever plants people decide to grow.
But it won’t just be about weeding and digging! It’s a chance to meet new people, sit in the sunshine, have a cuppa and enjoy the view. We even have barbecues and use the produce grown to help people make nutritious meals.
